The Liberal Democrats recently published a so called "alternative budget" which includes a proposal for a new higher rate of tax for top income earners.
Under their proposals, the Liberal Democrats claim the cash raised from a 50pc income tax band would pave the way for a £100 across-the-board cut in all council tax bills.
Once more, we see the Liberal Democrats trying to be all things to all people -- promising some people they will cut taxes, and telling others they will increase taxes.
This is from a Lib Dem party that warned that higher taxes would cause a recession, but then supported Labour's National Insurance increases. This is from a Lib Dem party that promised to cut taxes, but then declared taxes couldn't be cut without axing services.
As is normal with so many statements and policies made by the Liberal Democrats, this "alternative budget" contains a mass of contradictions.
