I WAS pleased to see the article by Gareth Tidman (February 7) about the proposed changes to the provision of care for the disabled, sick and elderly.

My immediate reaction was to say: "Why destroy a good caring service for something that has not been tried and tested?" The present carers are dedicated, cheerful and competent. They make all the difference to those of us who would love to be independent and wish to stay in our own homes.

I would like to know which "routine matters" are to be taken over by the private sector? They may be "routine" to those whose brainchild this suggested scheme is, but I know how the present social services have made my life in my own home possible.

This is a problem for the whole of society and not just for the patients (or clients). We need to remember we are people and not just statistics.
