POLICE are writing to all pub licensees in the Bolton area urging them not to open before 12 noon on April 5 when Bolton Wanderers play Manchester City at the Reebok Stadium.

The letter also thanks managers and landlords for their co-operation on the day of Mancheser United's visit to Bolton when they made the same request.

The kick-off for the Manchester City match has been switched from a 3pm to midday -- as was the United match -- on police advice.

PC Greg Pickles, who handles licensing issues for the police, said: "We want to starve the hooligan element of alcohol before the game.

"During the clash with Manchester United, we had very few incidents around licensed premises.

"We are asking pubs to stay closed until noon and if they do open, only to let their regulars in and be discreet. If they suspect anyone might cause trouble or is a Manchester City fan, they should remove them. We want to get the fans to the ground where we have the manpower to control them."

He said that after the game, the same rules applied. Publicans should only serve regulars and should be aware of groups of people congregating.

"Put a stop to any problems before they develop further," he advised.
