BRADFORD'S genial marketing team have played another masterstroke in securing the services of teen pop sensation Gareth Gates -- but it could prove a nightmare for the flat cap brigade writes Chris Hall
The local Pop Idol star's 15 months of fame have yet to expire and his appearance is bound to seal a bumper attendance for the Bulls' return to Odsal on Sunday.
Personally, I think his particular brand of trashy music is about as appealing as swallowing razor blades.
But his boyish charms will certainly woo hundreds, if not thousands, of adoring young fans to an otherwise unattractive fixture against perennial strugglers Wakefield -- and there lies the problem.
Now, I realise this might be a sign of premature ageing but I feel there are few more frustrating sights at a match than loads of kids, who clearly have no interest in the game, running amok.
Many times has the devil in me been sorely tempted to leave my leg outstretched as bunches of bored brats sprint screaming down the length of the stand and back for the umpteenth time.
And how many important matches have you looked forward to for weeks only for the strapping six-footer in front of you to put his completely disinterested toddler on his shoulders seconds after the game kicks off.
I know, I know. We need to keep attracting new generations of fans to keep the lifeblood of the sport intact. But can't we shove them all in a family stand and let the rest of us get on with watching the match.
Humbug.
