IT may be 140 miles from Cheltenham Racecourse and the going will be decidedly mild -- but the famous Gold Cup Day is all set to be a racing certainty at Bolton's Bob's Smithy pub.
The historic hostelry in Chorley Old Road is getting geared up for its own particular racing celebrations on Thursday - all in a good cause.
Licensees Stuart and Lorraine Brookes first started their own Gold Cup Day event four years ago to raise money for Bolton Hospice.
Last year, they donated £2,727 as a result, and this March the odds are even better on a successful afternoon.
The ladies wear posh frocks and fancy hats, and the men morning dress or smart suits, and two VIPs this year will be the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, Cllr John Walsh and his wife Christine.
There will be a luncheon followed by racing on a big screen and tote betting, with Colin McGreavy as MC.
Roulette and a big raffle -- supported by customers, the brewery and local restaurants -- will also boost the charity funds.
Tickets are £12.50 a head and available from the pub, or by ringing 01204-842622. "We're hoping it will be a great occasion," added Lorraine. "And that everyone wins."
