MEMBERS at a Worsley Golf Club have been stunned by the death of an elderly golfing couple who were killed in a crash in Cyprus.

Dorina, aged 68, and Eric Drinnan, aged 74, of Roe Green in Worsley, were visiting British friends in Paphos when the VW Beetle they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision at 6.15pm on Monday night. The couple, along with Aristodemos Ephraim -- the 60-year-old Cypriot driver of the other vehicle -- were killed instantly.

The driver of the Beetle was British man Alan Copley, aged 70, and his wife Patricia, aged 65, was the front seat passenger. They were travelling along the main Tsada to Megsagi road, heading from Paphos to Polis Chysohou. The Copleys, who live in Cyprus, were taken to Paphos Hospital with minor injuries. They remain in a stable condition.

Mr and Mrs Drinnan, who are not thought to have any children, had been members of Ellesmere Golf Club in Worsley for 20 years and Mrs Drinnan was due to take up post as lady captain on March 26. Alan Chapman, secretary of the Old Clough Lane golf club said: "They had gone over for a holiday to relax, as Dorina had a busy year ahead. They were regular golfers and had many friends here."

A spokesman for the British Foreign Office said: "We have no further details of the accident itself. The family have been told."
