GUDNI Bergsson is set for a shock return to international football at the age of 37.
The Wanderers' skipper, who has not played for Iceland for five and a half years and is due to retire from professional football in May, has been named in the squad for the European qualifier against Scotland at Hampden Park on March 29.
National coach Atli Edvaldsson, who is without the injured Ipswich centre-back Hermann Hreidarsson, paid tribute to Bergsson's enduring quality and impressive Premiership form when he named his squad of 18 for the Scotland game.
"I knew he would be ready when we needed him," Edvaldsson said. "I would have selected him even if Hreidarsson had been fit."
Bergsson won the last of his 77 caps in October 1997 before quitting the international scene after a row over travelling arrangements.
