A MAJOR campaign is under way to stress the need for more investment in the North-west's rail services.
At a meeting of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, members discussed the implications of the Strategic Rail Authority's 2003 plan.
The authority committed itself to lobbying for more investment in the region's railways. Its campaign has the backing of bodies from across the region in both the public and private sectors.
Councillor Roger Jones, chairman of the Authority, said: "The fact is that Greater Manchester has one of the largest rail networks in England.
"Studies have shown that there is huge potential for a better quality rail system to attract passengers off the county's roads and on to trains.
"We need to be able to provide a high quality, reliable rail service and infrastructure that will be able to cope with the ever increasing demands placed on it. This is only going to be achievable by substantial investment."
