A FIRE engine fanatic is going to pull a vintage engine he built from scrap 10 miles in memory of a Bolton firefighter who died of cancer.
Phil Frain, aged 32, met Phil Johnson five years ago while doing charity work at Bolton Fire Station and they became close friends.
Tragically Mr Johnson lost his battle against cancer of the spine last year, aged 36.
In a touching tribute, Phil is now going to pull the 122kg machine, a model of the 1912 Dennis fire engine, from Ramsbottom fire station to Bolton fire station where he will be met by members of Phil's former crew.
The father-of-three, a textile worker, hopes to raise £3,000 for Christies Against Cancer and The Fire Service Benevolent Fund
Phil said: "I was absolutely devastated when he died. He was a great bloke. The task I'm taking on is a difficult one but Phil is worth it."
Phil has so far managed to raise £850 for the pull and is relying on sponsors to help him reach his target. The event starts at Ramsbottom at 9am on Friday April 4. To sponsor Phil contact him on 01204370164. He also has a website, for more details go to www.rescuequip1.com
