WHEN schoolgirl Evie Jackson wanted some help in making her journey to school safer, she knew exactly the "write" thing to do.
The eight-year-old who attends Aspull Church School wrote to her local councillor Chris Ready and asked him to accompany her to the gates one day to see the problem for himself.
It was an invitation he could not refuse and he invited along Aspull policeman PC Paul Hesketh and Ian Lovatt, from Wigan Council's engineering services traffic management department.
As a result of the walkabout, the council has decided to act on Evie's request.
Existing warning signs on Bolton Road are to be replaced with new signs on bright yellow boards and the roundabout sign at Hall Lane is to be moved to give more space to pedestrians.
A pedestrian island with railings is also being installed along the route.
Evie's proud headteacher Carol Farrimond said: "The safety of our children is extremely important.
"We encourage our children to be independent and Evie's letter was very laudable."
Cllr Ready said: "Evie has played a big part in bringing about the improvements that are about to take place so well done to her."
