WIGAN chairman Maurice Lindsay has called on the Rugby Football League to slash the number of overseas players in Super League to put the great back in Britain.
Clubs have agreed to reduce the import quota from five to three over the next two years but Lindsay, the former RFL chief executive who negotiated the £87million deal with News Corporation eight years ago, wants the game to go even further by restricting teams to just two overseas players.
Wigan are currently trying to bring back the good times with a team of home-spun players.
All five of the club's overseas players are off contract at the end of the season and only two of them, Brett Dallas and Craig Smith, are likely to be offered new terms as the club focus almost exclusively on local talent.
"I think clubs are realising they have to grow some stars and stop worrying about just winning a trophy that year," said Lindsay.
"I notice that Ian Millward wants to maintain the high import quota but I take the opposite view. I think we must reduce it to two.
"If you brought two absolutely star players into each side, it would add some more colour and excitement but you must long-term plan.
"You mustn't plan for year to year just to try to win a cup to keep your fans happy. Fans are smarter than that. They want you to grow the family and that will help Great Britain."
