FORGET Popstars. And forget their rivals. The search is hotting up in Bolton to find a panto star!
Young hopefuls gathered at Bolton's Albert Halls for the first of a number of auditions for the role of a "pop prince" in this year's Christmas pantomime.
Theatre bosses are searching for a male to fill the part, ideally aged around 20, and the lucky panto star who is eventually chosen will take to the stage in front of a total of more than 250,00 people -- although the title of this year's pantomime is a closely-guarded secret for the moment.
Promoter Duggie Chapman said: "We are looking for a good looking lad who can sing and dance, ideally with a bit of experience. We thought it would be a great opportunity to give people a chance to prove themselves."
Phil Smith, entertainment manager at the Albert Halls, said most parts for this year's show had already been cast.
"We wanted to give a complete unknown the chance to come along, impress us and grab what will be a leading role in this year's show," he said.
"The role will require a dynamic individual who can act, dance and possess a good pop vocal range -- both for up-tempo and ballad songs."
Auditions are due to run on various dates until the end of this month. Participants are asked to bring either sheet music or a backing track on CD or Minidisk. For further details, call the Albert Halls on 01204 334306.
