Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was due to appear in court today to be sentenced for a speeding offence.

Ferdinand, 24, was told to attend Leeds Magistrates Court after he was convicted of speeding on the M1 near Temple Newsam on March 1 last year.

The England star was clocked speeding at an average of 92mph on the southbound carriageway in a 4x4 vehicle.

Ferdinand did not appear in person during his trial earlier this month where he denied the offence.

Following his conviction, District Judge Roy Anderson told Ferdinand's solicitor, Barry Warburton, that the footballer was required to appear today to hear his punishment and warned that under the "totting up" rules, a six-month ban was possible.

Ferdinand, of Linton Common, West Yorkshire, had nine points at the time of the offence.

The footballer joined Manchester United from arch rivals Leeds United for £30 million last summer.
