STAFF at a Westhoughton primary school are hoping items such as a signed Phil Collins CD will raise money for school building work.

Westhoughton Parochial School is holding an auction next Tuesday and other items include a signed Wanderer's shirt and a bottle of whisky from local MP Ruth Kelly.

The school, in The Fairways, has submitted a bid to the Department for Education and Skills for a £1 million building which will house four classrooms and office space.

If the bid is successful, the school will need to raise 10 per cent of the cost. The new building would be located behind the school's Grade II listed hall. Two classrooms and a storage area would be demolished to make way for it.

Acting headteacher Sandra Finley said: "We will be hearing any day now whether our bid has been successful. If we don't get the go ahead for the new classrooms, we will spend the money that we raise on refurbishing the school."

Viewing for the auction will begin at 6pm and the bidding will start at 6.30pm. Admission will cost £1, with children, who must be accompanied, allowed in free.
