THE Gilgryst Cup took centre-stage in the Air Miles Manchester League programme with the competition at the semi-final stage.

And there will be a new name on the cup as Prestwich Heys and Springhead both won at home to book their places in the Final.

Heys progressed after a high-scoring 5-3 victory over neighbours Elton Vale, Jon Garrick scoring twice for Heys with Jeff Kavanagh, Abid Uddin and Mark Denham also netting.

Goals also came from Elton's Derek Watson, Paul Owen and Dave Malius, keeping the visitors in touch throughout.

It took 22 penalties to separate Springhead and Atherton Town after the sides ended deadlocked at 1-1 following 120 minutes.

Danny Christie put Town ahead within seconds of the kick-off before Andy Fulham levelled late in the first half.

In the League, Breightmet United took over at the top of the First Division thanks to a late 2-0 win at home to a determined Milton side, Phil Heap and Damien Harper netting in the last five minutes for United.

Unsworth's superb defensive record was finally ended at Avro, where the home side not only scored the first goal to breach the visitors' defence for over 540 minutes but also won 2-1.

Dave Thornton and James Snowden scored for Avro, with Ian Harrington getting Unsworth's strike.
