From the Evening News, April 6, 1903: AT the quarterly meeting of the Bolton and District Head Teachers' Association, held in Derby-st. School, there was a large attendance.
During the meeting the President (Mr J.W. Draycott) spoke in deprecatory terms of the model course of school drill now practised in our schools. The present system, however well-suited for army recruits doing squad drill, is eminently unfitted for boys, altogether out of place for girls, and dangerous for children of weak and undeveloped frames, he said, adding that in the House of Commons it has already been promised that a committee will be appointed to inquire into the best form of physical training for children.

HOME-loving Bolton beauty queen Beverley Isherwood woke up today to the £5,000 Miss England crown. And her first words were: "I want to go home to Mum".
Beverley, aged 19, of Junction Road, Deane, beat 31 other contestants to win the title in London last night. Just over three weeks earlier she landed the job as hostess on BBC Television's "It's a Knockout".

SIR,- I am an American. Recently I came to Bolton, and the layout of the town and your grand civic centre made a great impression on me. The people of the town (I mean the older generation) are of the best make, generous, and liberal minded.
The youth, I am sorry to say, disappoint me. Apparently they are not proud of being Boltonians - or English. I find that they try to talk like us Americans. They also have the idea that all in the States dress loud. It's true, in the bowery of any of our cities, that colour is used in our dress, but not like anything I saw at a local dance hall. I should have gone there with dark glasses.
The girls don't seem to match themselves off with the boys who would make good partners. If he has a car or a motor bike, it seems he is the guy.
I will visit Bolton again. Lancashire has towns, villages and landscapes that can't be equalled anywhere, yet instead of being proud that they are Lancashire "lads and lassies" the youth are trying to make Bolton part of the 49th State of America. Yours, CEMBC, Iowa
