From the Evening News, April 11, 1903: APRIL is here, and yesterday for pleasure seekers the weather fanned the spirit of enjoyment - wild, natural enjoyment, the type beloved of the hardy Lancashire stock whence the present generation of the industrial army are sprung.
By thousands Good Friday was spent on the breezy hillsides of the magnificent country which smiles upon the town from the far sweep of east to north and west.

VANDALS are thought to have started a £10,000 blaze at a cricket club less than two weeks before the start of the new season. The fire wrecked vital equipment owned by Bolton Cricket League club Greenmount in Brandlesholme Road. THEY call them Unity houses. You may not have heard the name, but before long almost 2,000 Bolton people will be living in them. And they are one reason why hundreds of families on the waiting list for Bolton Corporation houses will get a home more quickly.
The Unity house is one of those seeming contradictions in terms - a permanent prefab. Thirty six are already tenanted on the Johnson Fold Estate. By August another 138 will be ready. And on Oldham's Estate at Sharples, 214 more are due to go up.
