A STITCH in time has helped children from a Farnworth primary school earn a place in history.

Every pupil at Queensbridge Primary School has worked on a metre square tapestry, which will be stitched together with others from around the world to create a memento of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The school was invited by the Millennium Tapestry Company to take part in the project to create a piece of art representing a year in the life of the Commonwealth.

The pupils were given the theme of "our school and community" and they spent four weeks creating their work, with the help of support staff.

They created a series of pictures around the central image of their school building.

Included in the tapestry were the former and current coats of arms of Farnworth and Bolton, pictures of children playing and local landmarks and businesses.

Even the nursery children took part, creating a fabric picture of trees growing to represent the saying "from little acorns, great oak trees grow".

Headteacher Sheila Holland said: "They all worked very hard on it and the support staff gave a lot of help.

"Everyone was really enthusiastic about the project, so much so that the nursery is now thinking of doing one of its own."

The tapestry has now been sent off and will be part of an exhibition touring the UK later this year.
