TWO police officers are to be recognised for their bravery after rescuing a woman who was being mauled by two dangerous dogs.

PC Barry Greyo, from Bolton, and PC Samantha Trowbridge, from Tyldesley, had to use CS gas and batons to stop the frenzied attack.

They will receive the Chief Constable's Citation of Merit and the Royal Humane Society Award for saving the woman, who suffered horrific injuries. PC Greyo, aged 34, and PC Trowbridge, aged 20, rescued her after being called to a house in Salford in July last year where a violent domestic dispute was taking place.

When they arrived, they found a woman being attacked by a large Rotweiller dog, while an occupant of the house was trying desperately to restrain it.

The animal continued to bite the woman's leg as the officers, despite the potential danger to themselves, tackled the animal in an effort to force it to release its grip.

This caused the dog to take an even firmer hold of the back of the female's head and neck as she lay screaming on the ground.

The officers used CS spray and batons to try to stop the dog, but it continued its frenzied attack on the woman.

Another smaller dog then joined in, but PC Greyo and PC Trowbridge were able to contain it in the back garden of the house.

After a long struggle, the two officers were able to force the larger dog to release its grip, and it too ran into the back garden.

The two animals continued to snarl as PC Greyo and PC Trowbridge prevented them from jumping the fence and escaping.

The RSPCA were summoned and the two dogs were destroyed. The woman was taken to hospital.

PC Trowbridge, who now works in Swinton, and PC Greyo, who now works in Leigh, will receive their awards from Michael Todd, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, at a ceremony on Tuesday at Sedgley Park Training School.

At the same ceremony, the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal will be presented to Constable Clive Strettle, aged 44, from Ramsbottom, and Constable John Griffin, aged 41, from Radcliffe.
