IN response to the letter of April 14 from Mr Brian Derbyshire regarding CCTV use and owner-occupiers. To quote: "They do not have to pay this charge, but they still get the benefit of the cameras."
Here at my home I have paid out of my own funds for extra security lighting and cameras after a number of stolen cars were burnt out, causing grave danger to people, property and homes.
Unlike Mr Derbyshire, I have had no council payment for the electricity, installation and purchase of these items. Neither shall I request it, and I am happy to see others benefit from the additional security. Camera footage works in fighting crime.
I do pay the authority a good amount per year in services and other charges. I believe each of us should do our bit to ensure the areas in which we live allow us to continue our right to enjoy peaceful enjoyment of our homes, it is a right that can be enforced. Sometimes to do so costs money. I agree with Mr Derbyshire that those who legitimately cannot pay should not be requested to do so. I would urge that Mr Derbyshire contacts his MP.
