A MAN who emigrated from Bolton more than 25 years ago astonished local library staff -- by returning six overdue books which he found in his attic one day.
He sent them back 27 years after they were borrowed and also enclosed a cheque for 50 euros -- about £33 -- to cover the fines.
"He was obviously struck by his conscience as he returned the books with a note and the cheque," said Bolton's Deputy Director of Education and Culture, Keith Davies.
"Ironically, despite the long period, the money was way too much. But, as there was no address, we accepted it gratefully."
Mr Davies told the story as a library fines amnesty was announced to run next week from Tuesday to Saturday.
Overdue books, talking books and CDs (but not DVDs and videos) which are returned to any library during normal opening hours will not be subject to charges.
And to spare borrowers' blushes, there will be special boxes for the returns.
There is a slight sting in the tale for borrowers of library books that are overdue, however. From Monday, April 28, there will be a small increase in the amount of the library fine.
