THE BOLTON Closed Championships brought the current season to an end.

The highlight of the Wednesday evening was the Open Singles final between the holder, Mike Moir of Ramsbottom A, and Darren Howarth of Farnworth.

They treated the audience to a feast of fast attacking and counter attacking rallies.

Mike won the first game at 21-19. Darren replied winning the second at a comfortable 21-13 but, in a tense third game, the two players matched each other to the end, with Darren coming out on top 21-19 to clinch the title and become the new champion.

Mike Moir and team-mate Mark Ramsbottom comfortably won the open doubles, beating team-mate Andy Jackson and Wayne Renton in straight games at 11 and 14.

Mark Ramsbottom also featured in the Open veterans final, winning game eight and 16 against Andy Lebutt of Lostock.

Rob Hall is the junior singles champion with Stephen Ross runner-up.

The O/60 Vets produced a good final between Brian Hall and Derrick Buckley. Brian, on a six-point start, won the first game 21-19. Derrick came back to take the second 21-18 but Brian ran away to win 21-9 and become champion.

Junior Siful Khan won the handicap singles, receiving seven points start from Derrick Buckley, in 21-13, 21-9.

Darren Howarth and Dave Griffiths combined to win the handicap doubles from Derek Watmough and Mike Dore.

The mixed doubles was won by Andy Lebutt and Kim Barnard from Dave Smith and Jean Smart.
