MANCHESTER Airport bosses could have a radical new security system in the palms of their hands.
The region's airport is set to become the first in the country to introduce a new hand-recognition system to combat terrorism.
Staff would use hand-recognition machines to access restricted areas at the airport.
Passengers, though, would continue to have their identities checked through the usual means -- passports and driving licences.
Results of a successful trial of an electronic hand-recognition system at the airport have been sent to transport ministers.
The pilot scheme was tried out earlier this year. A total of 68 office-based airport staff used the biomectric hand-recognition machine to access administrative areas. Others were encouraged to try to fool the machine, but to no avail.
The machine is programmed to each individual's own unique hand characteristics. Its infra-red light measures the length, thickness and surface area of the hand, turning the readings into a unique code.
