MUD and debris is causing a messy nightmare for Horwich residents as developers continue work on housing and industrial units in Crown Lane.
Bolton highways inspectors have written to building firms, including Barratts and Fairclough Homes, warning they need to ensure mud is cleared from vehicles leaving the site or enforcement action will be taken.
"It is a hive of activity down there and the volume of traffic, even without the lorries bringing mud on to the road, is a problem," said local councillor Barbara Ronson.
"The mud does get carried a long way and just adds insult to injury for people living further up Crown Lane who have to endure the extra traffic." Cllr Ronson says she will be monitoring the mud situation but does not envisage the problem being solved in the near future.
"Even if the developers all made sure their lorries went through wheel washes there are still cars from people living in the new houses which use the muddy road," she said.
