GREATER Manchester Police is keeping an eye on the nests of protected rare birds.
Insp Denise McGowan, wildlife liaison officer, is urging landowners, birdwatchers, ramblers and other members of the public to help the police, too.
"There was a time when many small boys collected eggs, mainly from common species and usually only one from a nest. However, in recent years, egg collectors have taken on a sinister new profile," Inspector McGowan said:
"Many collectors now target our rarest birds and take not one egg but the whole clutch. Egg collectors appear to be from all walks of life. When targeting a species they will often park away from the site and then walk around on foot in an attempt to locate a nest.
"I would urge anyone who notices anything suspicious in the countryside to contact the police on 0161 856 5050 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 as soon as possible."
She added: "If you think you are witnessing an illegal act, do not make an approach, but try to record the description of the people involved, equipment they have and the make, colour and number of any vehicle."
