A BURY soldier currently serving in Iraq is appealing for shoes for the country's poverty-stricken children.
Private R. Taylor is currently deployed on Operation Talic in Iraq with the 187 Squadron, 23 Pioneer Regiment.
In a letter from the Gulf to the Bury Times, the soldier writes: "Our current role is protecting the trucks delivering humanitarian aid to the local population.
"Our work is very much appreciated by the Iraqis and we are really making a difference.
"Something that has been noticed while we are out on the ground is the large number of children -- and adults -- who do not have any footwear.
"This is something my squadron and I would like to change."
He continues: "We intend to collect second-hand children's shoes donated by the British public. We will then deliver packs of shoes direct to the community where they are most needed. We will give them to teachers, religious leaders and doctors for distribution.
"It would be a rewarding feeling, knowing that the innocent children in this war get a small but meaningful and practical gift.
"Thanks in advance for everyone's help and all the best from the lads of 4 Troop."
Anyone keen to support Pte Taylor's appeal can send shoes to: the Shoes for kids Campaign, 187 Squadron, 23 Pioneer Regiment, Op TELIC, BFPO 662.
