STUDENTS had their new common room opened in style by DJs Flip n Fill and Phoenix Nights star Patrick McGuinness.

The new under 16s social room at Bolton Community College has been designed by the 20 14-16-year-olds under the guidance of expressive arts tutor Tabitha Simms and college youth workers.

A £2,000 grant from Connexions gave the students an opportunity to create a unique place where they can "chill out" between studies.

The students helped decorate the room, painting graffiti art featuring the words "The Future" on the walls.

They also chose their own equipment, including a TV and video, a Playstation games console, music system, mixing decks and hairdryers and other electrical beauty equipment for the girls.

At the youngsters' own request chart-topping DJs Flip n Fill performed the offical opening ceremony and spent time teaching the group a few mixing skills.

An impromptu appearance from Phoenix Nights star Patrick Guinness, aka bouncer Paddy, made the occasion extra special.

Tabitha Simms said: "It was an absolutely fantastic day, especially because Paddy turned up, as we thought he couldn't come.

"They have all worked so hard on the project, it has really kept their attention which is great. They joined in and the whole thing has really brought them to the forefront of college life. Some of them have even shown potential DJ skills themselves!"
