VANDALS killed three chickens, a rabbit and two pigeons during a shocking display of violence at Astley Park's popular pets corner.
The culprits scaled a 10ft fence and carried the animals out of the enclosure before hitting them against trees.
Police are investigating. It is believed youths are responsible and one person has come forward with the name of a possible offender after the thug boasted his Crime to friends.
The vandals also smashed up two bridges over the river, and now Chorley Borough Council has pledged to step up warden patrols in the park.
Pets corner is popular with families and has been particularly busy recently because of the school Easter holidays.
The enclosure houses goats, chickens, pigeons, rabbits and guinea pigs as well as an aviary containing budgerigars and cockatiels.
Lorraine Cross, the council's leisure services manager, said: "We have been having a few problems recently with vandals smashing windows in the changing rooms.
"But this incident is particularly shocking. It is hard to believe that people could do something like this, especially the killing of helpless animals.
"Our warden patrols will now be working with the police to ensure that nothing like this is repeated.
"Thankfully the wardens are based at Astley Park so they will be able to keep a close eye on pets corner in the evenings when staff are not there."
Anyone with information about the incident can call Chorley Police Station on 01257-262919, or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
