A SOMEWHAT reduced field, due to the BGA fourball and a very important football match at the Reebok, contested the Summer Medal qualifier at Turton on Saturday.
While the ground was still firm despite the rain the previous day, the wind had changed round to a more favourable south westerly, and this lead to much better scoring than last week, when only three players broke par.
Charlie Hodgkins played a very steady round to run out a comfortable winner from John Groom. John Williams' game has been suffering of late but a short holiday in Spain had recharged his batteries and he was rewarded with the best gross score.
The Captain, Fred Wallace, was another person to reduce his handicap, although this looked unlikely when he dropped no less than four shots at the easy first hole.
Summer Medal round one: 64 C K Hodgkins; 66 J R Groom; J S Williams; C M Noble; 67 F Wallace; D W Hilton; M J McNeill; G Hewitt; 68 J E Hunt; F Hough; 69 D T Bridge; C Hulmes; D Edginton; B L Renshaw; P Maguire; C M Kay; 70 J Dykins; S E Gittins; A S Mills; P Wallwork; S Forster; R Devine.
