I RECENTLY printed an undated picture of a crowded station at Adlington, where, if you recall, I mentioned that everyone was wearing head gear of some kind.
Reader G.W. Glover has contacted me to say that on the rear wall of the station was an advertisement for Fleetwood Routes, by the L&Y and LNWR railways. "These were separate companies until amalgamation in 1923 to form the large LMS (London, Midland & Scottish) Railway. In that case, the advertisement points to the picture being taken before 1923."
I said in my caption that all the people shown were men, but Mr Glover thinks that he can spot a couple of women, although he suggests that the male dominance on the picture means that they may have been waiting for a "football special" to take them to an important match via Chorley possibly at Preston (my own knowledge of that station tells me that they were on the Chorley platform, not the one for Bolton trains).
