When reader Stephen Vernon saw my old picture of Chorley Old Road, Montserrat, outside the Old Links golf club, on January 31, he felt, because I could not date it, that he might have the answer.
"I would suggest that it was taken in the mid-60s, but I am surprised at the road being almost completely deserted, unless, of course, the photographer was up and about very early in the morning, or perhaps on a Sunday," he writes.
"The vehicles shown help to date the photograph. The vehicle travelling towards the camera looks like an Austin A60 Cambridge, or the similar Morris Oxford, or possibly the larger Austin Westminster. The car on the right, facing downhill, looks like a Ford Zephyr/Zodiac Mk.3. The car in the distance (rear view) would appear to be an Austin/Morris J2 from the 1950s or early 1960s. I don't think that this stretch of road was tarmaced until at least the late 1960s."
