IN summer, Wolfenden School will close its doors for the last time.
It is actually celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, although since it was opened in 1913 many changes have taken place. For instance, all those years ago, it was made up of two separate schools, one for boys and one for girls. Later it became the Wolfenden Secondary School for girls, and then Wolfenden Girls' High School. However, by 1978, numbers had dwindled to 150 and it was closed with pupils being transferred to Smithills. It then continued as a primary school, which it is today, and when in turn the building is closed, the new school will open in The Valley.
The staff are determined that the building will not close without some celebration of the vast amount of good work done in it over the years. Many events are planned, including, says teacher Mrs G. Barnard, a reunion (on June 10), and displays of old photographs, articles etc. from the past.
Over the years thousands of pupils have passed through the doors, and there must be many old pictures around town. "We hope that past pupils will loan us their pictures for our display, which we hope to have up and running by the beginning of the summer term," says Mrs Barnard. They will, of course, be returned.
So start looking through your drawers and picture albums to see if you can come up with the goods! If you have anything which might help, or want more information, please contact Mrs Barnard at the school as soon as possible.
To set you off, Mrs Barnard has lent me these pictures mainly from the early 1950s, of girls in various lessons, plus one of birds being fed in the garden, and an earlier photograph of pupils, during the Second World War, designing 'propaganda' posters!
