A BOLTON Euro-MP has joined with others in the European Parliament to call for measures to prevent GM crops contaminating organic and conventional varieties.
MEPs voted in favour of geographic areas being declared as GM free zones if it is not possible to guarantee that contamination will not occur. Bolton Euro-MP and Liberal Democrat spokesman on the environment, Chris Davies, said organic and conventional farmers must be protected from the possibility of GM contamination.
He said: "It is well known that organic farmers can command premium prices for their crops and with food manufacturers are insisting on GM free produce the same can be said for conventional farmers.
"The income of organic and conventional farmers should not be put at risk to satisfy the desires of GM seed producers."
