January 18, 1993: Wanderers striker Neil Whatmore grabbed his 15th goal of the season to give his side a win against Hull City at Burnden Park.

He hit target from point blank range in the 48th minute of a game played in difficult conditions with the pitch cutting up badly.

Hull goalkeeper Eddie Blackburn had to make a string of fine saves to keep the Tigers in the game, but hot-shot Whatmore stole the two points.

Nicholson found Greaves to the right of the area and he put a cross over to the far post.

Peter Reid headed at goal and although Lord blocked the ball and partially cleared, Whatmore crashed a shot into the roof of the net.

Reid was very close to doubling the lead in the dying moments when he hit a fierce shot following a Whatmore knock down.

But again Lord was on hand to palm the ball wide.

BRUCE Rioch's FA Cup heroes came back down to earth after the dizzy heights of Anfield - and landed safely on a cushion of three comforting league points.

The 3-1 win at home over Plymouth may not go down in Wanderers folklore - as the 2-0 win over Liverpool undoubtedly will - but it has certainly helped their promotion push.

The players looked as though they were suffering a cup hangover early in the game, but they dug deep and got the result which means they have now won six of their last seven Division Two games.

By half-time they were 3-1 up with super strikes by Andy Walker and Mark Seagraves in quick succession putting Wanderers ahead. Then Andy Morrison made the unwise career move of putting an own goal past player-manager Peter Shilton.

The best goal of the day came in the 26th minute from Plymouth's Paul Dalton who dribbled through the Whites' defence before dispatching an excellent finish.

AN injury time strike by Temuri Ketsbaia broke Bolton hearts as Newcastle beat Wanderers 2-1 at St James' Park.

With the game level and the closing seconds ticking away Allesandro Pistone delivered a first time cross which was headed down by Alan Shearer.

Keith Branagan got down to the ball but lost it due to Darren Peacock's tough challenge.

All of a sudden the goal was gaping and Georgian Ketsbaia had a free shot which he could not miss.

Shearer had been outstanding all afternoon, especially as this was his first start of the season due to a knee injury.

The Magpies had gone ahead through midfield ace John Barnes in the sixth minute, the ex-England international lobbing Branagan after getting in behind Andy Todd.

Nathan Blake equalised in the 72nd minute when he received a Jimmy Phillips ball, beat Peacock and fired low past Shaka Hislop.
