I recall that when I was young and living with my parents (and my grandfather after his "better half" died) in Grove Avenue, Adlington, the local band used to come along to the house - among numerous others, of course - during the festive season playing carols and collecting money towards their running costs.
In my mind, I always thought it was on Christmas Day, but it seems that I was wrong by a week, because the caption to this 1974 photograph says: "Mr and Mrs J. Richardson, right, of Home Farm, Anderton, hand out cups of coffee to members of the Rivington and Adlington Prize Band when they called to play carols on their New Year's Day tour of the district."
