BOLTON has been involved in a number of marathon walks and record-breaking feats.
In 1828, a man named McMullen walked 104 miles in 24 hours. The course was a "measured" mile from the Britannia Inn, Deane Road, to the Gibraltar Rock Inn. McMullen traversed this stretch 52 times in each direction.
Nearly 100 years later another "local", named "Ned-o'th'-Mesturs" walked from Manchester to Blackpool in 13 hours 10 minutes, no mean feat even by present-day standards, particularly as the contestant was 79 years old!
Another septuagenarian, Bill Evans, a retired Horwich railwayman, walked from Horwich to the top of Snowdon in 1934 to celebrate his 72nd birthday
