RADCLIFFE AC put on a five-mile trial race at Phillips Park to raise money for Christie's Hospital.

The event was hailed a success as it raised £500 with 103 runners taking part.

The weather was exceptionally wet the day before leaving the course with plenty of mud and big puddles to splash through.

Blackburn Harrier Matt Nuttall made the difficult going look easy as he built up a decisive lead over Horwich's Rob Jackson in second place.

The pair gave it every effort as they battled through the swamps until Nuttall got away to secure a good win in 25min 14secs to Jackson's 25.37.

Gary Fleet, of Saddleworth Runners, came in third and won the veterans' prize, followed in by ladies winner Anne Powell, whose top class display (28.13) was more than enough to guarantee that she finished in first place among the ladies.

Middleton Harrier Steve Carey took the over-45s prize in 29.09.

Bury's Donna Allen was second lady, putting in a great effort over this course, while Monique Hollinshead came over from Dewsbury to win the over-35 section.

Gerard Navan and Pete Jepson, both Rossendale Harriers, fought it out for the over-60s prize, Gerard's 33.14 keeping him just 28 seconds clear.

Bury's Jeff Hignett won the over-50s, and the ladies' over-50s prize went to Carole Bowness of Middleton Harriers.
