DWAYNE Smith's match-saving debut century for West Indies against South Africa on Tuesday could be bad news for Westhoughton Cricket Club.
The 20-year-old produced a dream start for his country when he became the first West Indies batsman for 26 years to make a century on his Test debut.
He hit two sixes and 15 fours in an unbeaten 105 to salvage a draw for his side on the final day in Cape Town.
But the hero of his country may have given a headache to his club in the Bolton League.
Smith helped Westhoughton finish second in the Bolton League last season with steady rather than spectacular form.
Club president Bill Crook admitted officials at the club were a little surprised that their pro was called up by his country as he is still so young and learning the game.
While Westhoughton are delighted to see Smith perform so well on the highest stage they know it could have adverse consequences for them.
"Because he has done so well he may now be involved in the next games against England," Mr Crook said.
"There are a lot of one-day games which overlap with our season in the Bolton League and that would cause us a problem.
"Dwayne was recommended to us by an ex-pro of ours, Rod Estwick, who coaches one of the Barbados youth sides.
"He was described to us as the next Collis King because he is a big hitter.
"He didn't set the Bolton League on fire, but he was pretty steady, and when he did have his big hits you could see the quality.
"He is still only 20 and still developing and learning. Because of his age, we were a little surprised when he was called up. But the West Indies have a youth policy and like to bring through some of their younger talent.
"We have a lot on our minds at Westhoughton at the moment and Dwayne's success gives us another thing to think about.
"If we have to look for another pro, then Rod Estwick will keep his eye open for us."
