GREATER Manchester Waste Disposal Authority has terminated its fridge handling contract with Oldham-based Britannia Import Export Ltd.
A spokesman for the authority said the firm, responsible for safely disposing of domestic refrigerators from waste sites across the region, was axed because of breaches of licence concerning the storage of fridge units.
The spokesman said: "The decision to terminate the contract was taken after concerns came to our attention from the Environment Agency and local authorities where the firm has its fridge stockpiles."
The authority has put in place temporary alternative arrangements with another company for fridges to continue to be collected and de-gassed from household civic amenity sites. New permanent arrangements will be put in place as soon as possible.
