Burnley started the game with a penalty penalty and soon followed this up with a try from their well drilled forwards.
Bolton responded well but had been stopped short or held up over the line on several occasions.
The visitors eventually elected to kick at goal from a penalty and John Hodgkinson kicked the three points to pull the score back to 8-3 at half-time.
Bolton levelled the score when the line out worked efficiently and captain Sam Hilton drove the catch and drive over the line, but the conversion dropped agonisingly short.
With fifteen minutes remaining scrum half Mark Higgins made a break from the base of a ruck, his chip and chase breached the home defence and some good interplay giving Sutcliffe the chance to score. Hodgkinson this time converted with ease.
From an excellent Bolton kick, Burnley made a mess of a lineout and Green crashed over from the back of the line. The conversion sailed over and the final whistle blew. Bolton had thoroughly deserved a victory.
