FOOTBALL legend Roy Hartle is having second thoughts about putting his FA Cup winning medal up for auction.
The former Wanderers player said he was becoming concerned about selling the 1958 victory medal because of the memories it held for him.
Chester auction house Bonhams is putting 14 lots of Mr Hartle's football mementoes under the hammer, including the medal he won when Bolton beat Manchester United in a famous 2-0 victory at Wembley Stadium.
Mr Hartle said: "We are still deciding whether or not to sell the medal. It was the pinnacle of my career and my family and I have some concerns."
Mr Hartle -- nicknamed "Chopper" during his 14-year professional career -- will still go ahead with the sale of his other mementoes.
They include the 72-year-old's shirt and shorts from the 1953 FA Cup final in which Wanderers were beaten 4-3 by Blackpool. He is also selling his autograph book, which includes the signatures of some of Manchester United's Busby Babes.
The complete collection is estimated to be worth £12,000.
Mr Hartle said: "We haven't got as far as discussing what we'd spend the money on."
He added: "My mementoes have been in the loft for years and years. I only bring them down once in every blue moon and was thinking what the point of it was.
"The shirt, for instance, has been in a drawer for 10 to 15 years and hasn't seen the light of day in all that time."
Many football pundits regarded Mr Hartle as the best full-back never to win an international cap.
His nine carat gold FA Cup medal is expected to fetch about £4,000. The entire collection will be put up for sale at Bonhams on January 28.
Mr Hartle said: "When I got my box of cuttings down from the loft, it brought back so many memories. I read through the various Bolton Evening News articles written by sport reporters over the years and I said to my wife, Barbara, 'my entire life is in that box'."
Mr Hartle joined Wanderers from Bromsgrove Rangers in 1948, aged 16.
He turned professional in 1952, making 499 appearances for the club, 447 in the league, and scoring 13 goals.
