From the Evening News, January 9, 1904: CIRCULARS have been issued by the directors of the Ramsbottom Spinning and Manufacturing Co Ltd, Union Works, Stubbins, stating that they find the company cannot, by reason of its liabilities, continue its business.
A meeting of shareholders has been convened for next Saturday when a resolution will be submitted to voluntarily wind up the company. The company's mill is the largest in Ramsbottom. Its stoppage will give a hard blow to Ramsbottom's industrial progress.
THE Goodwin Sands lightships are to be put in communication with the shore by means of wireless telegraphy and the installation is to be completed in about a month.
From the Evening News, January 9, 1979: BRITISH rock group the Bee Gees have been nominated for three Grammy awards by the US National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Stayin' Alive is being put forward as record and song of the year and Saturday Night Fever is being proposed as album of the year. Other contenders for Record of the Year are Anne Murray for You Needed Me, trumpeter Chuck Mangione for Feels So Good, Billy Joel for Just the Way You Are and Gerry Rafferty for Baker Street.
From the Evening News, January 9, 1954: ICY roads in Bolton yesterday resulted in Bolton ambulances being called out to a total of 25 cases in which people had been injured by falls. In most cases the accidents were to elderly people and fractured wrists, arms and legs were the most common injuries. Mr V. Williams (Superintendent) said today that when there was a danger of slipping many people made the mistake of holding themselves rigid. This only increased the possibility of serious injury.
From the Evening News, January 8, 1994: REGULARS at the Strawbury Duck can carry on drinking after British Rail amended plans to cut train services. Proposed timetable changes - due to take effect from May - would have meant that almost all off-peak services along the Manchester-Blackburn line would not stop at Entwistle. After listening to the views of residents and train users, Regional Railways have decided to provide an early and late evening service in addition to their proposed new service.
THE BBC will switch EastEnders to a three times a week format this year, but it is still deciding which night to run the third episode.
