RAIL travellers are celebrating as work finally began on Chorley train station this week as part of a £450,000 investment in the site.
The project is being carried out by trains operator First North Western, in partnership with the county and borough councils.
The refurbishment should make a big difference to commuters and will include new toilet facilities, improved access for the disabled, and a CCTV system, monitored by Chorley Borough Council.
Denise Lennox, commercial director of FNW, said: "We are committed to providing the best possible service for our customers and that includes investing in the most up-to-date station facilities.
"We're sure that they will be delighted with the new-look station once it is complete."
Enhanced lighting and heating systems will provide a warmer feel, and outside the station will also be spruced up and painted.
The scheme follows a recent project to upgrade Chorley Bus Interchange -- which will be officially opened on 21 January.
Councillor Anthony Gee, chairman of Chorley Town Centre Forum, said: "Any refurbishment such as this is good for Chorley."
He added: "The current facilities at the train station are only adequate and a bit mundane, but the new development will ensure that the station is right up to modern standards."
