CHORLEY'S MP has hit out at 'bonkers' bank rules after he was stopped from putting loose change in his account.

Lindsay Hoyle immediately closed his Bradford and Bingley savings account after staff told him he could cash no more than five bags of change.

He has now fired off an angry letter to the bank's chief executive asking him to make sure the rules are made clearer.

He said: "Luckily I was able to go across the road and put the money in my current account at another bank.

"But other people may not have another account. What if a person has to carry all their loose change into town only to be told they cannot put it in their bank account?"

Labour MP Mr Hoyle has had a bank account at the Chorley branch of the Bradford and Bingley since 1970. But he immediately closed it after the incident. He had collected the cash from a jar he used to deposit small change.

He said: "If they don't want my money then fine. But the rules need to be made clear.

"I don't think it's the fault of the staff, it's got to come from the top and everyone must be clear about the rules, including customers."

A Bradford and Bingley spokesperson said: "Bradford and Bingley has a policy of not taking more than five bags of loose change at a time. We are not a current account bank and for the security of our staff and how the facilities are set up we cannot usually take more than that amount.

"Staff can use their discretion to pay in more in special cases, for instance in childrens' accounts.

"It's unfortunate Mr Hoyle chose to close his account but that is, of course, his decision."
