LEIGH Centurions were one of the rebel National League clubs who wanted to scrap the play-off system as a means of deciding promotion to Super League.

Though they were heavily defeated in a vote on Tuesday, Hilton Park officials remain convinced that a traditional first-past-the-post method is still the fairest option for the rugby league competition.

The play-off and Grand Final method has failed to win over all the game's traditionalists, and Leigh -- beaten in three Grand Finals in the last four years -- were one of the clubs pushing for a re-think at Tuesday's gathering of all 20 National League clubs in Halifax.

Leigh executive director Derek Beaumont said: "We voted for a return to a first-past-the-post system.

"We think it's the best and fairest method of deciding which club is promoted to Super League. Winning the league should be the decisive factor.

"A number of clubs had voiced their concerns in recent months, but when it came to the crunch very few of them voted for change. You can read into that what you will. We accept the decision with good grace and will now fully focus on securing a play-off place and then winning a Grand Final."
