A POLICE officer is under investigation after he was arrested in connection with a two-car collision.

Constable Tariq Mahmood, from Farnworth, has been questioned by officers investigating a collision between an Alfa Romeo and a Peugeot 106, it has been revealed.

Two women and a child in the Peugeot were treated in hospital for minor injuries. It is alleged that the Alfa Romeo failed to stop after the collision.

Pc Mahmood was arrested a month later on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He was questioned by officers and then released. An investigation into the collision was continuing, a police spokesman said today.

Pc Mahmood, aged 29, is based at Bootle Street police station in Manchester city centre.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Stamford Street East, Ashton-under-Lyne, at 3.40pm on Saturday, October 18.

Two women and a child were taken to Tameside General Hospital with minor injuries and later released. No one else was hurt.

A police spokesman said: "A 29-year-old man from Farnworth, Bolton, was arrested on Tuesday, November 18, in connection with this incident on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He was questioned, then released pending further inquiries."

The spokesman confirmed that the man arrested was a serving police officer. It is understood Pc Mahmood is on sick leave. He answered bail on Saturday.
