AS one of the majority in most issues, I am another from the "Bolton should remain Bolton" brigade.

The idea promotes snobbery. I could imagine Hyacinth Bouquet (not Bucket) relishing the idea of embellishing names, eg hyphenating surnames etc. At the end of the day, Bolton is Bolton, so let's not have any confusion.

About 40 years ago there was a rumour going around to change the name of Westhoughton. The overspill battle was going then, and sick jokes were going around calling Westhoughton "City of Westhoughton" which, unfortunately, seems to be more relevant today. Incidentally, I have never used "Greater Manchester" on any correspondence, as I am not a Mancunian. At the end of the day - what's in a name?
