AS a Scot, I have now been resident in Bolton for 34 years and I love it.
It was the very name - Bolton - that invited me to accept my appointment in the town.
I had visions of its history, of the Industrial Revolution and of its proud people - images that have only strengthened over this period. As some critics to the proposal of Bolton-le-Moors have remarked, the image that name creates is of rural England. Bolton must become a city and it will only do so by keeping its present name. After that, we will witness tasteful development as we expand under the spirit and leadership of our city fathers.
As I write, the Wanderers are preparing for tonight's match against Manchester United. I hope we win but, yes, it will be difficult. I won't be on the terraces, but I would rather cry, "Come on, Bolton" than "Come on, Bolton-le- Moors", as I am sure the latter call would only encourage MU and, indeed, could result in a goal being scored against us before my call was finished. Let us all promote Bolton!
