PETER Whelan's The Herbal Bed will be staged by Bolton Little Theatre at its Hanover Street premises until January 24.

The play was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at The Other Place in Stratford-on-Avon in 1996.

Shakespeare's daughter, Susanna, is at the centre of the play. She was married to a respected doctor and highly skilled in the preparation of herbal remedies.

In 1613, she was accused of having a sexual liaison with a neighbour and to clear her name, went to the Church Court. But zealous Puritans were gaining influence. Geoff Bennett directs Helen Price-Aindow, Helen Stubbs, Michael Haworth, Barry Hall, Glenn Robinson, Michael Tatman, Fred Mayers and, making her debut, Kayleigh Lunt.
