DR Ivan G V James, of Chapeltown Road, thinks the idea of having a windfarm on the moorland north Edgworth is a "monstrous proposal".

Why?

Is it because the doctor thinks these windmills are an eyesore?

If so, then he should take a look at the ugly cooling towers and smoke-belching chimneys of conventional power stations. These stations burn fossil fuels in colossal quantities, and pollute the atmosphere with global warming greenhouse gasses.

I know windfarms alone will never replace power stations, but the more windmills we use, the fewer chimneys we will need.

We should rejoice that, at last, the powers-that-be are actually doing something positive about producing "clean" electricity, by using wind and tidal power. Instead of opposing them, we should back them wholeheartedly.

Britain is the windiest country in Europe. We also have a long coastline with tidal estuaries and rivers. All this natural energy must be used to our advantage, and to the advantage of our planet.

We owe that much to future generations.
